9-11 year olds
Welcome to Upper Key Stage 2 and our three Year 5/6 classes: Maple, Oak and Pine.
This term, our topic in year 5/6 is ‘Destructive World.’ Within this topic, we will focus on the Amazon Rainforest in South America and study how the rainforest supports our planet. We will also look at current concerns and make comparisons between the Amazon and other areas of the planet which are under threat such as the Antarctic Ice Caps and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Children will learn how to critically review evidence, make comparisons and develop their own opinions and solutions.
Within English, our focused reading text is ‘The Explorer’ by Katherine Rundell. This exciting text, about children who spend time living in the rainforest, will be the basis for a range of writing opportunities including descriptive writing and report writing. There will of course, be a clear focus on key writing skills such as developing sentence structure, spelling and grammar, to ensure that our writing is clear and precise.
During each school day, children are encouraged to make healthy life choices by eating fruit at break time and taking part in the ‘daily mile’. This focus on keeping our bodies and minds healthy will link to science lessons, where children will be learning about the heart and circulatory system.
